In essence a capacitor is a passive electronic device that stores energy in the form of an electrostatic field. A capacitor consists of two plates or conductors separated by a a dielectric.  The standard units of Capacitance are: 

microfarad: µF (1 µF = 10-6 F) 
nanofarad: nF (1 nF = 10-9 F) 
picofarad: pF (1 pF = 10-12 F)

Sonicaps are far from cheap but in traditional audiophile terms they are vastly less expensive than their acoustic competition.  Our research has shown that as we started to improved the quality of the capacitors in our crossovers, the more focused and natural sounding the soundstage became.  We are of the opinion that  poor quality capacitors tend to distort the audio signal's phase and amplitude characteristics which impacts negatively on the speakers ability project a stable and well focused image. 

If you intent going the digital crossover route the Sonicaps is an excellent interim choice without breaking the bank.
